David Mathews’ goal is to capture that elusive glimpse of personality that makes portraiture a unique experience. Towards this goal he constantly studies and collects portraiture from the 17th to 19th centuries, with a special emphasis on late 18th century France, when pastel, oil and sculptural portraiture all flourished. David creates portrait paintings in both oil and pastel. He also creates portrait sculptures in terra cotta, bronze and porcelain. Starting as an illustrator, for which he has received many awards, including best of show awards, his interests led him on to portrait work with its infinite possibilities. He spent four years studying with local portrait artists and has also studied with Margaret Baumgaertner and Philippe Faraut. He is a juried member of the Degas Pastel Society, juried member and past director of the Atlanta Portrait Society, Member of Excellence of the Southeastern Pastel Society and a member of the Portrait Society of America and the Pastel Society of America. His pastel and oil portraits have won numerous awards at Atlanta Portrait Society and Southeastern Pastel Society juried shows. David teaches pastel and oil portrait painting at the Mabel House in Mableton, as well as regular private classes in his studio and three day workshops in the southeastern US and France. |
